Visitors to Cheviot provide a great deal to the local economy. With the recent re-opening of State Highway 1 north of Kaikoura, we again look for welcoming visitors who are keen to explore what Cheviot has to offer, or those who are just passing through and need a bite to eat or a coffee. 

Our lovely cafés, takeaways, shops are open and Gore Bay is always a magnificent spot to spend some time.

Out and about

Cheviot’s tree lined streets make it an attractive town to explore. A dedicated walking track takes you down the Gore Bay road and into the magnificent Cheviot Hills Domain where specimen plantings date back to the 1860s.

The walking path continues back into Cheviot and is popular with locals and visitors looking to break their journey.

Just down the road is Gore Bay, a well known surf and swimming beach and popular holiday spot. At low tide it is possible to walk around the coast to Port Robinson and Manuka Bay where a track through coastal forest brings you to a lookout above the bay with views to the Kaikoura mountains and Hurunui River mouth.

The Hurunui and Waiau rivers provide great fishing for trout, salmon and whitebait. The clean, clear waters are popular with kayakers and jetboaters, and the many swimming holes are a welcome retreat on a hot summer’s day.

North of Cheviot is St Anne’s Lagoon, a wildlife sanctuary that is home to a wide variety of water fowl.

There is an attractive 12 hole golf course is open to the public, an immaculate bowling green, and collection of paper roads and farm tracks are ideal for mountain biking and hiking while road cycling enthusiasts can enjoy the Gore Bay Tourist Drive from Cheviot through to Port Robinson and Domett.

A Club Outing?

A number of clubs have organise a group outing to Cheviot, and had a great time! We have co-ordinated various activities for them including a lovely lunch. Not only did the people on the outing really enjoy it, but it was a great boost to our cafes, shops and morale.
